424th Separate Battalion of Unmanned Systems “Svarog”

The 424th SVAROG Battalion is a unit within the Unmanned Systems Forces equipped with a wide range of UAVs to perform diverse missions, from aerial reconnaissance to fire engagement of targets.

History

The unit’s journey began in the summer of 2024. The first Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Vadym Sukharevskyi, was well aware of the experience in employing unmanned systems demonstrated by an Air Assault Forces regimental commander with the call sign “Zhuk.” He was entrusted with leading the newly formed unit within the USF. At the time the directive was issued, the 424th Battalion had no UAV platforms or vehicles. The first order brought five personnel into the unit. Later, the commander assembled a core leadership team and proven fighters who had served alongside him since 2022, developing an effective UAV company.

During its formation in autumn 2024, the SVAROG Battalion became part of the Kyiv Defense Forces and Assets Grouping.

At the beginning of 2025, the first crew group deployed to the eastern front and commenced combat operations. The battalion’s first significant engagements included the destruction of an artillery piece, a group of motorcyclists, and a Ural truck. Among the unit’s notable achievements is the destruction of the enemy’s innovative electronic warfare system known as “KOP-2.” Reconnaissance teams of 424 SVAROG repeatedly guided HIMARS strikes against high-value enemy targets.

Over a 12-month period, the unit conducted more than 1,000 combat sorties and engaged over 750 targets.

“Zhuk”

Hero of Ukraine. At the outset of the full-scale invasion, he took part in the liberation of the Kyiv region. He first employed unmanned systems in 2022 during the Kherson counteroffensive, after which he actively developed the unmanned component within the unit.

Unit philosophy

The unit’s command follows the principle “Live today, fight tomorrow,” because the most important thing is to survive the war. Only then can a soldier carry out missions and remain effective tomorrow and the day after. According to the battalion commander, his duty is to teach subordinates the fundamentals of survival in this dynamic drone war. The unit needs heroes — alive.
