429th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems “Achilles”
The 429th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems “Achilles” is a volunteer unit formed in the first days of the full-scale invasion. Combat missions are carried out using aerial and ground unmanned systems.
Kind to comrades, relentless to the enemy
History
The core of the unit consists of volunteers who, on February 24, 2022, formed a rifle company within the 128th Battalion of the 112th Territorial Defense Brigade. During combat operations on the Kharkiv axis, the company began employing unmanned systems for aerial reconnaissance and artillery fire adjustment. The unit went through the Kharkiv counteroffensive alongside the 92nd Brigade, to which it was attached.
Each year, “Achilles” has expanded due to its high battlefield performance. From 2022 to 2025, the unit progressed through the stages of company–battalion–regiment–brigade.
The 429th Brigade “Achilles” ranks among the top four most effective formations of the Defense Forces. In less than four years of existence, the unit has destroyed and engaged more than 54,000 enemy targets, including 34,932 targets over a ten-month period in 2025.
“Achilles” took part in repelling one of the largest mechanized assaults of the war on September 26, 2024, on the Kupiansk axis, which lasted nearly three days. Approximately 50 units of enemy equipment and a significant amount of personnel advanced near the villages of Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, and Kruhliakivka. Strike drones of the “Achilles” unit destroyed or disabled around 40 armored vehicles, including tanks, IFVs, MT-LBs, APCs, and others, as well as approximately 100 enemy personnel.
The unit was named after the call sign of its commander — Achilles. This call sign was given to Yurii Fedorenko by his comrades due to his resemblance to the ancient hero: courageous, determined, freedom-loving, ruthless toward the enemy in battle, yet kind and attentive to his fellow soldiers.
Major Yurii Fedorenko, “Achilles”
Yurii Fedorenko began his combat path back in 2014 in the ranks of the National Guard of Ukraine during the active phase of the ATO. In 2022, he headed the 4th company of the 128th Battalion, 112th Brigade within the Territorial Defense Forces. Thanks to his openness to innovation, an ordinary rifle company initially began conducting artillery aerial reconnaissance to adjust the fire of the 92nd Brigade’s artillery, and later moved on to operating strike UAVs.
The unit operates with as much democracy as possible within a military framework. Orders from command are always followed, but the team seeks the most effective and safest ways to accomplish tasks, rehearsing various scenarios, because the commander understands the value of every soldier’s life, each of whom has a family relying on them.
