20th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems K-2
K-2 is a unit that has grown rapidly due to strong recruitment performance. The brigade employs various types of drones to conduct reconnaissance and engage the enemy, while placing particular emphasis on the development of ground unmanned systems.
History
K-2 originated as a reconnaissance group. At the time of its formation in 2017, it consisted of around ten service members and was led by Kyrylo Veres. During the ATO/JFO period, K-2 fighters took part in combat operations near Popasna, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Krasnohorivka. In 2022, the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade was designated as K-2, with Kyrylo Veres appointed as its commander.
In late 2024, personnel of the battalion formed the core for the establishment of the 20th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Systems “K-2,” which was later expanded to brigade level by autumn. The unit’s motto is “Their deaths — our lives.” This philosophy of preserving the lives of service members is not about retreat, but about resistance. Not to die, but to destroy. The phrase originates from the novel Spartacus by Raffaello Giovagnoli — “Mors sua, vita nostra” (“Their deaths — our lives”).

Kyrylo Veres
Brigade Commander — Lieutenant Colonel Kyrylo Veres, Hero of Ukraine, full holder of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, People’s Hero.
Kyrylo Veres became interested in unmanned systems as early as 2016 during the JFO period. While conducting operations as part of a reconnaissance group, he mastered drones that were just beginning to appear on the battlefield.
He commanded the defense of Mariinka, where the K-2 Battalion successfully repelled enemy attacks. He is also one of the key commanders who effectively defended the approaches to the city of Siversk. As a former infantry commander, Kyrylo Veres is convinced that an infantry soldier on the battlefield should never feel abandoned. For this reason, he defines the brigade’s primary priority as protecting infantry forces. An infantry soldier must know that they will always be covered by fire and evacuated if wounded. According to the K-2 commander, this significantly increases overall combat effectiveness.

Unit Advantages
At K-2, a recruit’s civilian skills and experience are highly valued. This is a place where you do not simply serve in the military — the military can become a new point of growth for you.
The unit actively develops its own innovations through an in-house R&D department. K-2 promotes and implements new practices within the armed forces, such as scaling casualty evacuation using ground unmanned systems along the entire line of contact.
